Here Kitty, Kitty

Many of us have gotten used to our old friend PuTTY, as our beloved default telnet/SSH client. And truth be told, for the money (it’s free), it is hard to beat. It is easy to use, light weight, and does exactly what it is supposed to do. Why would I ever quit using it?

We’ll, if you’re operating on a MS Windows platform, there is a new cat in town: KiTTY. This telnet/SSH client is based on PuTTY but adds a long list of additional features.

A few of these new features that I enjoy in particular are:

• The Session Launcher: This will put a new icon in your system tray. When clicking this icon, you get a menu with all your sessions. This is great for quickly accessing your saved sessions.
• URL Hyperlinks: You can have KiTTY activate any hyperlink displayed in the terminal. When clicking on such a hyperlink, it will be opened in either your default browser or a specified browser.
• Automatic password: KiTTY can automatically log you into a session.
• Duplication: You can quickly launch a duplicate session by pressing ctrl-shift and left clicking somewhere inside the terminal window.
• Config Box:  The configuration window in PuTTY only allows you to see six sessions. KiTTY, by default, shows you 21! You can even configure the size of the config box yourself by editing the kitty.ini file.
• Run local scripts: You can run scripts saved on your hard drive in the KiTTY session.
• Clipboard printing: You can highlight text in your terminal window and print it to a local printer.

BTW: The kitty.ini file is located in C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\KiTTY
